One Air Bus 320 had crashed near Bangalore airfield on approach (short finals). The fleet was grounded, a high level enquiry was ordered. The aircraft accident was due to human error. Lack of adaptability to the new systems. The Air Bus fleet remained grounded for eighteen months, incurring heavy losses. Country Director Mohan foundation Operation Eyesight Universal Lalitha and Raghuram are a couple and a team. They counsel families of accident victims who are declared brain dead, to donate organs to save other lives. Tragedy struck them when they lost their son to a road accident. But Raghurams decided to see their son live in others by donating his organs. They run Mohan Foundation in Hyderabad. Ms chandralekha, Social Activist Nat Purwa, Lucknow As a daughter of Nat Purwa, a village close to Lucknow, where every girl is raised to be a prostitute, Chandralekha had no choice but to get into the profession. For 20 long years Chandralekha sold her body to earn a living. She gave birth to four children. 15 years ago Chandralekha reached breaking point. “ I went to a village nearby where a drunk thakur held me at gun point and abused me and that is when I came home and cried and decided that I have to give this up, “she said. Mr. Charudatta Vitthal Jadhav, Vice President International Braille Chess Association Mr. charudatta Vitthal Jadjav became visually impaired due to an eye disease at the age of 13. Today, he is 41 and lives in Mumbai. He plays and promotes chess among the visually impaired; also he was the first Asian to be the Vice-President of International Braille Chess Association. He is involved with the All India Federation of Blind for Chess and many of his students have participated in world chess championship. His chess software for visually impaired is helping people in 18 countries. Mr. Uttam Teron,Founder, Parijat Academy Uttam Teron, the person behind Parijat Academy at Pamohi village just outskirt of Guwahati city has made it to the list of 35 Indian youth icons. Uttam Teron has established Parijat Academy in 2003 for four poor children in Pamohi village with Rs. 800 which has now more than 500 students along with 17 staff members. Mr. Nityananda Das, Choreographer and Teacher Kalashram Shri Nityananda Das lost one leg in an accident about 10 years ago, in spite of that he is a Nayapalli odissi Dancer, living in Bhubneshwar. He left home at the age of 10 and joined Jatra where he learned Odissi with the group. He dances with one leg and he is also a choreographer and a teacher who runs a school by the name of Kalashram. Mr. Swagat Thorat, Producer-Director, Wildlife Films-Editor, Sparshdnyan3 (India’s 1st fortnightly Newspaper in Braille for the Blind People) 45 year old wildlife photographer, Swagat takes out India’s first Braille newspaper for the visually blind. Published twice a month, sparshdyan or knowledge by touch is a 50 page Marathi newspaper launched in Feb 2008. Swagat puts in his own money for the printing of the paper and takes a yearly subscription fee only from institutions that can afford to pay. He’s given the blind their basic right to news. Mr. Rangaswamy Elango Panchayat President, Kuthambakkam Village He is a Gandhian, dalit and the Panchayat president of Kuthambakkam village (made up of 7 hamlets) of Thiruvallur in Tamil Nadu. Born and brought up in the village, Elango is a chemical engineer and was a scientist at the Council for Scientific Industrial Research. Ekabgi’s visits to this village exposed him to the hardships of poverty, case riots, illiteracy, and illicit arrack trade. In 1994 he quit his job and started working on a rapport building exercise in his village for two years, and independently contested and won the 1996 Panchayat election. RANDOM THOUGHTS Ten ways of being foolish 90 per cent of Indians have an unscientific temper. The facts bear it out I had mentioned the figure 90 per cent Indians are fools. I replied that it was not a mathematical figure, what I meant was that an overwhelming number of Indians were fools. One, Tamilians are some of the finest and most intelligent among Indians. They have done the country proud in various fields- scientific research, mathematics, It, medicine etc. In the US and Europe, the science and mathematics departments of many universities and institutes are full of Tamilian professors. Yet Tamilians are some of the most superstitious people in India. This may sound like a paradox, but it is true, and this just shows that scientific and unscientific ideas can co-exist in the same head. I was told not to take other in Rahukalam Time. Two, most ministers and even many chief justices of high courts take oath at the “auspicious” time, as advised by their astrologer. Three, judges of the Supreme Court are allotted houses in the Supreme Court Judges pool. One of such houses was 7, Tughlak Lane. Unfortunately some mishaps happened to some judges who occupied this house, and thereafter no judge would accept it, thinking it was inauspicious. Chief Justice of India wrote to the concerned authority to remove that house from the judge’s pool, which was done, and another house allotted to the pool. Four, some year back it was announced in the media (which plays a prominent role in spreading superstitions) that Lord Ganesh was drinking milk. There was rush of huge crowds in many cities in India to offer milk to idols of Lord Ganesha. Similarly, some years back a miracle chapatti was announced. Many such “miracles” keep happening from time to time, and most people believe them. Five, this is a “baba-bound” society. Consider the number of “godmen”, their huge following and huge properties they amass. The latest one claims to have third eye, like Lord Shiva. It was published in a leading English newspaper (April 18) that he had told people in Raipur not to keep shiv alingams at home for their welfare but to put them in temples. As a result, temples in Raipur were flooded with Shivalingams. Six, when I was a judge in the Allahabad High Court, it was announced that someone in Tamil Nadu had discovered a method of converting water into petrol. Some of my colleagues said that now we will get cheap petrol. Seven, before finalizing a marriage most parents consult astrologers, and it is only if the “kundali” matches that the proposal is finalized. The poor “mangalik” girl is often rejected for no fault to her. Eight, everyday, large number of TV channels show astrology and all kind of superstition. Their owners have given one simple instruction to them-keep the TRP rating high. Unfortunately, the intellectual level of the middle classes (who are the main viewers) in India is very low. All they wish to see is the lives of film stars, fashion parades (often with half naked women), cricket (which is opium for the masses) and of course, astrology. And so this is dished out day after day to get high TRP ratings. Nine, most Hindus are communal, and most Muslims are also communal. As I have repeatedly pointed out, they were not communal before 1857. Before 1857, Hindus used to celebrate Eid, and Muslims used to celebrate Holi and Diwali. Muslim rulers, like the nawab of Avadh, Tipu Sultan etc used to organize Ramlila, give grants to Hindu temple, etyc. It was after suppressing the Mutiny that the British decided that the only way to control India was by divide and rule. Hence a deliberate policy was laid down by the British to generate hatred between Hindus and Muslims. All communal riots started after 1857. The English collector would secretly call the local Panditji, give him money, and ask him to start speaking against Muslims, and he would also call the local Maulvi secretly and give him money to speak against Hindus. This poison was systematically spread year after year, decade after decade, until it culminated in the Partition of 1947. Even now, there are powerful vested interests promoting communal hatred. Ten, social evils like honour killings, dowry deaths, female feticides are still widely prevalent in India. Not to demoralize Indians, but to point out to them the correct path to prosperity. It is only scientific thinking that can save us from the disaster to which we are headed. India has a strong scientific heritage (see my article ‘Sanskrit as a language of science’ on kgfindia. com). It is only when we go back to the path shown by our great scientific ancestors, Aryabhatta, Brahmagupta, Sushrut, Charak, Ramanjuan and Raman and spread scientific thinking widely that we can recover our former glory. I was then in command of NO44 Sqn. Operation Brass Tacks was at peak and blooming. All Sqdns of the IAF had been moved to their Op locations. So was 44 Sqn moved to Nagpur by mid Jan 1987.

I was called to Air Hq during 3rd week of Jan 1987. Then ACAS (Ops) briefed me that Cat ‘A’ vehicles of the Army (BMP’s) are to be moved to Shyok Valley. Thoise Runway was just 1700 meters at that time: I discussed the matter with the ACAS (ops) and the Dops (T & M). And desired that I would like to make a heptr recee to Thoise.

The recee was done on 27/28 Jan 1987. A Broad white line was marked on the landing R/W to indicate the touchdown point. All touchdowns were to be ensured ± 1 meter of the white line. Any overshoot of white line would have resulted over shoot and the touchdown before the white line would have resulted a touchdown on Kaccha. WAT calculations were done and an empty aircraft (IL-76) landing was carried out on 29 Jan 1987. After that 2 IL-76 were positioned at Chandigarh and I commanded 18-20 sorties in about 4 days time.

Brief details

Date 29-30, 31 Jan & 1 Feb 1987 RW length at TE-1700 meter. Load carried –one BMP in each sortie was carried weighing 13.5 Tonnes.Off loading time at TE-7 minuts.

Spl Note- Every time I landed at Thoise Lt Gen Handoo, then Army Cdr NC, used to bring a cup of tea and a samosa for me and hug me and state “Ashok you have done yeoman service to the Indian Army. At that time IL-76 were operating even at sea level to airfields of 2400 meter length.

Later on IL-76 started regular operations to Thoise when R/W was extended to 2700 meters. I was AOC CG during 1992-1993. Now R/W length at Thoise is 3500 meters. That is the story of Thoise. One of the most satisfying operations, at that time. Senior Tpt Pilots had warned me “don’t be fool hardy. You would kill yourself”. The firsthand account of Thoise operations.

I have been reading a lot on opcactus from time to time. But the last few e-mails on the subject have provoked me to put the records straight.
It was on 3 Nov 88,(I was JD ops T & H now re-designated Director) then VCAS (AM NC Suri) called me to his office at 0830 hrs) and asked “what is the availability of Tpt fleet”, I promptly replied 5 IL-76 and 16 An-32’s at Agra and another 14 An-32 could be at Agra by 1300 hrs from Jorhat. He directed to alert the fleet and be ready to launch the ops to Madives. The Indian high commissioner to Maldiev was in the office of the VCAS. VCAS directed me “ to proceed to Army Hq opr room (along with the HC). “I would follow”. By about 0915 hrs VCAS top brass of the Army, MEA officials had arrived. The Op plan was chalked out at Air Hq and Army Hq. A para drop was planned initially. It is not widely known that 3 An-12 aircraft of ARC were already airborne with NSG troopers and stayed put at Nagpur.
A final decision was to be taken by the CCPA (say PM)-Shri Rajeev Gandhi) whether we go in for a police action or Mil intervention. By 1130 hrs all members of the CCPA had assembled in the Army Hq ops room. The wait was for the PM. Who was away to Calcutta and was on his way to Patna. He was informed of the emergency. PM walked into the Army Hq Ops room at 12 PM. He gave go ahead for mil Ops.
I and Brig VP Malik (later on COAS) were briefed by the respective vice chiefs for the ops. I was designated the AB force commander by the VCAS and directed to proceed to Agra and brief the AOC/Sqn Cdr, operating crews on the air borne operations. Indian HC to maldive also accompanied to Agra.
We landed at Agra at 1330 hrs and I immediately briefed all operating crews of 44 Sqn on the overall ops which had been conceived and planned at Air and Army Hq.
Between 2 PM and 5 PM VCAS was calling me up, every 30 mts what is the delay? Delay took place as 6 para troops (the first load) arrived only around 3:30 PM. And the 2 IL-76 aircraft were readied by 5 PM.

AOC (Late Air Cmde NPS Sahota) was away to command Hq. When he arrived, he had serious reservation of the CO 44 Sqn even flying in the 1st aircraft. It was on my insistence that AOC allowed the CO to fly. I had flown the whole mission as the Air borne Cdr from LHS.
The first aircraft had barely 150 troops and 2nd aircraft followed after 10 mts interval. And 3rd aircraft after nearly 5 hrs.
A code word was to be received OH TVM. Which was received. Yes the 1st aircraft landed with lights indicating the R/W and then blinking from time to time, landing was a challenge.
Brig Bulbul Balsara, then Para Bde Cdr (unfortunately he is no more), was the ground forces cdr. Fortunately the ground forces did not face any resistance and fight. The mercenaries had run away on hearing the sound of the landing IL-76 aircraft. As narrated by late Brig Bulbal Balsara. Safety of the President Gayoom was ensured.
In any case the Ops cactus was well conceived and professionally executed.
Spl Note: No information could be available on Male airfield either at army or Air Hq. It was one COL at Army Hq who had visited Maldives as a tourist and made a tourist map available, which was the only information on Male (Hulela)air field.
